A case study of the application of the precautionary principle in US-EEC trade of beef from hormone-treated cattle

Abstract: This case study presents the US-European Economic Community dispute over the trade of beef from hormone-treated cattle, which illustrates the application of the precautionary principle in trade barriers. The case study includes questions for class discussion. This case is relevant to contemporary agricultural trade barriers in cases where Europe maintains more stringent regulations than the US on the grounds of the precautionary principle. This study was written with support of the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis under its summer research program in the summer of 1998 under the direction of George Gray.
