Training in banking and finance in Africa: Update, challenges and prospects

Abstract: This paper provides an update on education and training in banking and finance in Africa. It analyses the opportunities and challenges faced by African banks with regard to the training of their human resources. Globalisation of financial markets, regulation, increase in customer needs and technology progress introduce some changes in the business operations of banking and finance. As a consequence, African banks will be forced to adopt development strategies based on permanent efficiency seeking and a permanent review of their working methods in order to meet the requirement related to their business operations. This would require better targeted training programs that meet their needs and that are appropriately carried out and followed up. The implementation of these training programs would be facilitated by the establishment of a co-operation framework and of a dialogue between African banks and national and regional training centres.
