A chapter in African Women Judges, 2025, pp 83-106 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Judge Reine Alapini-Gansou has crafted a career giving back to her country, her continent, and the international community at large. From her early life and education in Benin, Alapini-Gansou knew that she could use the law to correct the injustices she saw around her. As a professor, head of her own law firm, and activist in civil society, Alapini-Gansou leveraged her experience to move to an international platform when she campaigned and was elected to the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR). She was later elected as a judge to the International Criminal Court and has since provided her expertise on multiple important cases. While balancing many different personal and professional roles, Alapini-Gansou overcame gender discrimination at different stages of her career.
