Abstract: Abstract This is the introduction to the book. It notes that Milton Friedman is certainly a great economist, having written two books which are central to modern understanding, dozens of important articles, and hundreds of pieces of journalism. Yet he is also an exceptionally controversial one. His contribution and views are to be understood by considering a broad range of his work, and giving attention to the intellectual context in which he presented them, not just the supposed effects they are often said to have had. An path to discovering an explanation of his controversial status is suggested.
