Abstract:
Abstract There is a notable congruence of theme and a basic agreement on outstanding issues in the papers by Professors Nove and Vajda on which I shall anchor my comments.1 This congruence, I suspect, stems from a common approach, which these two authors share with Adler-Karlssen and with other European authorities on East-West trade: they are interested in the nature of the political and economic obstacles to trade and in the ways by which they might be removed; their analysis — this applies particularly to Vajda’s paper — is sharply focussed on the liberal policies they advocate for both East and West. While most of their points are valid and many are quite perspicuous, their instrumental approach puts a special stamp on the character of their contributions.
