Abstract: Abstract Recent literature on agriculture in the developing countries has tended to draw a sharp distinction between those that have been able to accelerate the rate of growth in this sector to phenomenally high levels over a short period of time and those that have failed to do so. This difference in performance has been attributed to the successful transformation of traditional agriculture in the former through changes in technology. The inference has also been drawn that the same or similar changes in technology in other developing countries would lead to comparable breakthroughs in agriculture and to high rates of growth within relatively short periods.
