Abstract:
Abstract The preceding paper has already made it clear that secular economic expansion alone would not justify belief in an increase of welfare. We come now to a new stage. We must now ask whether progress in economic welfare alone is in its turn sufficient to ensure human progress in a broader sense. This is a formidable question. It would seem to require that we should begin by throwing some light on the very concept of progress.
