Chapter Chapter 18 in The Economics of Education, 1966, pp 497-515 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Almost every educational system is today being subjected to a twofold pressure: to the pressure of numbers (the growth of the population and the spread of schooling) and at the same time to the pressure exerted by the advances of technology in a world for which education must prepare people. Education is thus becoming a mass problem, it is taking on an economic dimension by reason both of the resources it absorbs and of the training demands it is required to meet. Along with its permanent task of developing the personal abilities of each individual it now has to ensure adaptation to economic requirements both in the interest of the individual and in the interest of society. The rôle of education is in fact to train people for the tasks of tomorrow so that each may take his share in contributing to the economic prosperity of the nation.
