A chapter in Value and Capital: Fifty Years Later, 1991, pp 469-476 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Value and Capital was my second book; the first, my Theory of Wages, had appeared in 1932. It was not until I had done with the former that I can reckon myself to have done anything substantial towards its successor. But Robbins had set me to lecture on general equilibrium already in 1930. I suppose that must count as preparation; but there is more certainly the paper published in German (called ‘Equilibrium and the Cycle’ in English re-translation) which shows that my thinking was moving in a Value and Capital direction already in 1933. I reckon 1933–5 to have been the main years of gestation.
