Spatial Practices of Mēru and Bulletin Board

Tomoko Kurihara

Chapter Chapter 8 in Japanese Corporate Transition in Time and Space, 2009, pp 189-216 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The space of email and the bulletin board on JCars’ corporate Intranet is a further dimension through which we explore the interconnectedness of workers in relation to hierarchy and community. Ethnographies of Internet use in Japanese white-collar organizations are not commonplace; as such, this book makes a significant contribution to an emerging field that studies new technologies in the context of local knowledge. Interactive communication transforms communicative styles and social structure but these are embedded in existing practices and power relations. Moreover, the transformation enables us to gain a different perspective on the idea of community from that which we considered in previous chapters.p1
