Abstract:
Abstract The goal of codetermination or Mitbestimmung is the resolution of conflict through dialogue rather than force. German codetermination seeks to guarantee employee involvement in the regulation of working conditions as well as in economic planning and decision making. Mitbestimmung is based on notions of equality of capital and labor, considerations of industrial democracy, and the need for stability through social development, and coresponsibility. It takes place at two levels: at the establishment through the agency of the works council (or Betriebsrat) and at enterprise level through company codetermination (Unternehmensmitbestimmung). Codetermination is one of the special features of so-called Rhenish capitalism with its emphasis on collective, long-run success and a guided or coordinated market economy.1
