Software Based on the Science of Decision Making: Tools Organizations Can Use

Roger C. Schank, Dimitris Lyras and Elliot Soloway

Chapter Chapter 3 in The Future of Decision Making, 2010, pp 59-83 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract While case-based reasoning has numerous benefits for organizations, at first glance it may seem impractical to put cognitive science tools into practice. For instance, companies may lack the budget to staff all key decision-making positions with people who have the preferred relevant experience. They may tell their experienced people to rely on their gut but have various rules and cultural prohibitions that mitigate against such decision making. Employees might also believe they possess the savvy to make appropriate case-based choices, while in reality their experience is not always applicable in a given situation.
