Abstract: Abstract It was seen in Chapter 5 that despite much concern in advanced industrial societies about long working hours, these paled into insignificance compared to the hours worked by car carrier crews. Hours of work are only one indicator of work/life balance and in this chapter we consider a number of related issues — the chance to get ashore during what, especially for ratings, are long periods contracted to going to sea; the impact of different voyage cycles; how easy it is to get shore leave; the extent to which crews get sufficient rest from their duties; problems of pressure of work, long hours and fatigue; and finally, social isolation on-board also having been considered in Chapter 5, problems of isolation from family and friends.
