Abstract: Abstract Having looked at the inner core of the leader, established the need to “vision”, and drilled into the soft fabric of the enterprise to surface sentiments, the need for strong underpinning becomes evident if truly great leadership has foundation. This underpinning in terms of the strength of the corporate structure and its ability to hold up the vision can make the difference between falling short of, or achieving, the strategic direction. So not only does the great leader need the “spirit” to succeed but also the “spine” in more ways than one. This spine is not just the obstinate doggedness and strength of the leader themselves but the strength of the corporate structures holding it up to the competition.
