Abstract:
Abstract As I explained earlier, this book is not about envy as a pathological condition or as a strong personality trait. What I am interested in is envy as a fundamentally human emotion that most people are likely to experience in the workplace. René Girard shows that the function of traditional social systems is to prevent envy from becoming widespread and from degenerating into uncontrollable violence, which would put the system at risk of imploding (this function is always concealed from the group members and acts without their knowing). Thus, the mimesis theory does not envisage imitation as an automatic process; it is seen as a process that is intrinsic to the behavior of human beings living in groups, but one that the system can control.
