Chapter Chapter 10 in Managing Politics at Work, 2009, pp 130-147 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The preceding four chapters have focused on how to get things done productively with other people and, crucially, how to take into account the political realities of the situations you find yourself working in. The previous two sets of tools and case studies focused on how to work effectively with others to achieve your goals and on the pitfalls of failing to consider the consequences of your actions for your business relationships, your colleagues, your clients and, ultimately, yourself. Let’s now move on to discuss an issue central to the quality of every business relationship you have in your workplace, the level of trust that exists between you and the people you are working with. This chapter will explore the three interconnected issues of: The degree to which a colleague – or you – uses trusting or untrusting behavior at work. Your particular way of judging a colleague to be trustworthy or untrustworthy. How you decide whether a colleague’s behavior is politically motivated.
