Chapter Chapter 11 in Managing Politics at Work, 2009, pp 148-159 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This case study is set in Tokyo in the music industry. It focuses on two American employees of a large music group who work to upgrade and install the complex technology that supports the Tokyo music production unit. Their work takes in sites across the Far East and Asia. A senior and influential manager, Stephanie, is conducting the yearly performance evaluation of her top performing young manager, Bryony. Bryony has reported to Stephanie since she joined the music group just under two years ago. While the two women have very different styles and value systems, they get on well enough that Bryony considers them to be friends, albeit business friends. Stephanie and Bryony both travel extensively – but usually separately – and when they are in the Tokyo office at the same time they go for the occasional drink after work. They sometimes get a sandwich together at lunchtime and they share an interest in tennis. Last year Stephanie used her contacts to get VIP tickets for Bryony and her partner to attend the US Open Men’s Singles Final at Flushing Meadow.
