Four Scenarios for the Future

Chapter Chapter 4 in Global Energy Transformation, 2009, pp 27-41 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract In the current literature a wide range of visions of the future are emerging. There are people who envision a future that will unfold as a continuation of past trends of increasing prosperity through technical and economic development. This may still be the most widespread picture of the future. I call this scenario “business as usual.” There are also experts in a wide range of fields, such as climate, the environment and peak oil, who envision futures that are substantially different from the present and where forces that have had a limited role historically take center stage and transform our environment and society in ways that most of us do not expect or wish for.
