Chapter 2 in Performing Gender at Work, 2009, pp 11-39 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Currently, we appear to be witnessing radical changes in the world of work and gender relations. With changes in the economic mode of production, organisations are believed to become flat, flexible and even feminised. Organisations are now operating in network-like structures. Work is becoming flexible in terms of its mode, time and location, and workers are often granted the right to manage their own work independently. Biographies take new shapes, and a standard career pattern is no more. Gender relations are supposedly changing, with more women excelling in education and entering paid employment. At the same time, the job market is segregated by gender. In this chapter changes in the world of work and in gender are outlined and interrelations highlighted.
