Jamie’s Kitchen and the problem of young workers

Peter Kelly and Lyn Harrison

Chapter 2 in Working in Jamie’s Kitchen, 2009, pp 79-109 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In this chapter we will introduce detail about the Fifteen Foundation’s training programme — the development of which is reflective of some of the drama we witness in the original Jamie’s Kitchen TV series. This discussion will centre on the ways in which the Foundation identifies, understands and represents the individuals that it sees as the target population in its programme. The Foundation targets its training, education, work-placement and employment programmes to a particular population: a population that can be characterized as marginalized, unemployed (even unemployable) young people, aged 16 to 24 who have little or no employment history, or marketable employment (life) skills and capacities. Often, these labour market-related deficits are further complicated by drug- and alcohol-use issues, criminal activity, homelessness, and histories of abuse and violence.
