Abstract:
Abstract NLP has proved difficult to define neatly. Various definitions exist, some enigmatic, some pithy, and some apparently competing. For example, it has been described as an attitude of curiosity, as ‘the art and science of excellence’ (O’Connor & Seymour 1990:17), as ‘the study of the structure of subjective experience’ (Dilts et al 1980), and more. Virtually all the definitions found in the literature have been generated by people working within NLP and, as Young (2004:60) points out, these perform a variety of functions. In contrast, Isabel Losada, who has written about her experiences of a variety of personal development and self-help methods, encapsulates NLP as ‘variations on “learn how to feel great”’ (Losada 2001:194).
