Abstract: Abstract The title of the present chapter includes a question we are obliged to answer more tentatively than Lenin attempted to answer it, almost a century ago, in his similarly titled book. But it is a question that conceals another, much more basic to Marxist thought: is imperialism a specific ‘stage’ of capitalism? This inevitably diverts our discussion to issues of ‘history’, of ‘transformations’, of ‘phases’ or ‘stages’ of capitalism.
