Chapter Chapter 5 in China Counting, 2010, pp 68-87 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Within Greater China, individual rights remain subsumed to Chinese values — values with strict deference to hierarchy. Hong Kong’s administration was to be governed, according to its first Beijing appointed chief executive, Tung Chee-hwa, by Chinese values: ‘trust, love and respect for our family and our elders; integrity, honesty and loyalty to all; commitment to education; a belief in order and stability; a preference for consultation rather than confrontation’. As an optional extra, he also mentioned ‘a preference for obligation rather than individual rights’.
