Riding the Waves of Design: Industrial Design and Competitive Products in the Norwegian Marine, Maritime and Offshore Sectors

Grete Rusten

Chapter 9 in Industrial Design, Competition and Globalization, 2010, pp 195-219 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Industrial design as a tool to enhance competitiveness has received increased attention in many economies. Many Western countries have begun to develop policies that are intended to enhance the design-intensity of products that are produced by indigenous firms. Industrial design is also considered by the Norwegian government as a strategically important tool that brings added value to new and existing products in ways that enhance the ability to support a higher price. The latest design policy initiated by the central government calls on producers to increase the awareness, knowledge and use of design to develop better and smarter product and process solutions. Priority has in this policy document been given to the maritime, tourist, food and forest industries (Nærings- og handelsdepartementet 2008). The programme that followed up on this declaration began with a budget of 10 million Norwegian kroner (NOK) in 2009, and includes three tasks: a national business survey to investigate the use and competitive effects of design, economic support for new design projects and a Design Effect Award organized by the Norwegian Design Council ( http://www.norskdesign.no ).
