Abstract: Abstract Considering that: the European Commission employs 27,000 people and the European Parliament has 736 Members (MEPs) and some 4,000 civil servants; the European Commission (EC) has an annual budget of €110 million and a monopoly over initiating legislation that affects 495 million citizens in twenty-seven member states; European law accounts for 70–80 per cent of member states’ legislation; and that more than 1,000 journalists are accredited to the European Commission press room (more than to the White House press office in the USA). it is hardly surprising that there are at least 15,000 — some say as many as 30,000 — lobbyists in Brussels working for some 2,500 interest groups solely in order to influence European legislation or get it changed in their clients’ interests.
