Pricing Policies
Nick Gardner
Chapter 6 in A Guide to United Kingdom and European Union Competition Policy, 2000, pp 92-108 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract While many of the commercial policies which are adopted by businesses maybe pursued under conditions of secrecy, their pricing policies are necessarily open to inspection and analysis. It would seem that analysis of those policies offers the best prospect of detecting departures from competitive market conditions, and that their regulation should provide one of the most effective ways of limiting any resulting damage to the public interest. As this chapter will show, those appearances are deceptive. In fact, investigations of pricing policies and the prescription of remedies for abuse have often faced the competition authorities with some of their most serious conceptual and analytical problems.
