Where Business Meets Society: Learning From the Case Studies

Stephen Morrow

Chapter 4 in The People’s Game?, 2003, pp 128-144 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The previous chapter was devoted to analysing aspects of the ownership, control and governance structures in a number of European clubs, both in the context of the particular country’s system of corporate financing and governance and also that country’s football culture and context. In this chapter, themes and differences that emerge from the case studies are identified and analysed. Drawing on the academic literature in these areas, the chapter aims to specify the extent to which these findings can inform our understanding of ownership and governance structures among other football clubs in that country. To what degree are there examples of best practice that may have relevance beyond a particular club or company; beyond a particular country? However, it is important to reiterate that only four clubs in four countries were considered in any detail in Chapter 3— Tottenham Hotspur (England), FC Kobenhavn (FCK) (Denmark), PSV Eindhoven (PSV) (Netherlands) and Inter Milan (Italy).85 Consequently, some caution needs to be exercised in interpreting the findings.
