Type-A Behaviour Pattern: A Canadian Study

Muhammed Jamal and Vishwanath V. Baba

Chapter 13 in Misbehaviour and Dysfunctional Attitudes in Organizations, 2003, pp 250-262 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Modern society and its constituent organizations, regardless of sector or type, have been plagued with a variety of dysfunctional attitudes and resultant misbehaviour among its members. No organization, economic, political, social, cultural, religious, and academic, is immune to negative attitudes and attendant behavioural malfunctions. The cost of such misbehaviour runs in the billions of dollars annually due to poor performance, loss of productivity, poor physical and mental health, accidents, absenteeism, turnover, theft, etc. Therefore it is both important and timely to address the issue of organizational misbehaviour, its antecedents and its consequences via systematic study and research. This chapter is one such attempt where we look at the impact of personality on dysfunctional attitudes that lead to organizational misbehaviour. More specifically, we are interested in documenting the influence of Type-A behaviour pattern on the onset of poor job satisfaction, low levels of organizational commitment, stress, absenteeism and turnover intention.
