The Essence of a Good Relationship

Abstract: Abstract The qualities which chief executives interviewed sought and often found in leaders can be summarised in the following ‘composite’ cameo (‘The Good Leader’). The antitheses of these qualities are summarised in the second cameo (‘The Bad Leader’). This material is familiar from other recent studies, such as the SOLACE report (2006). However, listing desirable qualities is one thing; stimulating them when they are absent is another! A more challenging agenda for chief executives is how the desired qualities can be generated (if not already in existence) and how ‘problem’ characteristics can be overcome. This agenda takes a chief executive into the world of negotiation (and sometimes bargaining) and requires personal relationship skills (discussed in Chapters 4 and 5), at which some chief executives are clearly better equipped than others.
