Chapter 6 in The Learning Advantage, 2011, pp 114-131 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Leadership requires more than analytical skills; leadership requires emotional intelligence—understanding and managing the emotions of self and others. Emotional intelligence involves self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Learning-directed leaders understand the importance of emotional intelligence in self and others. A key element to developing emotional intelligence is motivation to learn. This chapter describes the role of emotions in learning, how to harness the power of emotions to learn more effectively, and how to use emotions to meet new challenges. As leaders develop awareness of their own emotions, they enable followers to achieve greater self and social awareness. Research reveals that cognitive ability is not as important to leadership success as was once thought. Rather, success as a leader lies in the motivation to learn, the drive to acquire new skills, the development of emotional self-awareness and control, and the ability to read and influence the emotions of others.
