Abstract: Abstract In using the word custody to group diagnostic themes, I am drawing from its definitions of safe-keeping, protection, care and guardianship. A key question raised in this chapter is ‘against what or whom is protection being sought?’ Later chapters will reflect more critically on that question, but in this chapter I present edited extracts of the original research texts to illustrate the various claims for protection. The custody theme is characterized by polarities, tensions and dilemmas, which are summarized in Figure 4.1: Figure 4.1 Custodial tensions
