Chapter 2 in Retail Internationalization in China, 2011, pp 6-20 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter describes the background of the research, based on the research questions that have been set up. The chapter introduces both the macro and micro environment of China’s retail business. The macro environment analysed here involves the important economic changes in China during the transitional period between 1995 and 2005, the influence of China’s transitional economy and the WTO entry on its retail sector, and foreign direct investment (FDI) trends in China. The micro environment analysed involves the changes in China’s retail sector, retail structure, and environment during the same time period, emphasizing the changes associated with China’s entry into the WTO, and foreign retailer expansion.
