 Workplace Partnership and the Future Trajectory of Employment Relations within Liberal Market EconomiesTony Dobbins and Tony Dundon Chapter 10 in The Future of Employment Relations, 2011, pp 165-191 from Palgrave Macmillan Abstract: Abstract In this chapter we review the form, practice, and variable outcomes associated with workplace partnership. Enterprise or workplace-based partnership differs from national-level social pacts, in that in the former it is claimed that participants actively engage in dialogue leading to more informed decision making for the good of all stakeholders in the organization. In contrast, national-level social partnership is distant from the enterprise with a focus on broader macro-level social and economic policy, with gains accrued to citizens and the economy as a whole. However, the two are not mutually exclusive. National-level social partnership arrangements shape the institutional context in either supporting or hindering workplace practice. Tripartite systems of participation at a national level – involving government, employers, and unions – can be a precursor to the efficacy of workplace-level partnerships.
