Fair Exchange in Milanese Shops

Jan Ch. Karlsson

Chapter 6 in Organizational Misbehaviour in the Workplace, 2012, pp 31-32 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Employees sometimes see their jobs as an exchange with their employer. That is also what workers at big retail companies in Milan did. They regarded the relationship between themselves and their employers as a fair exchange — or at least that is what they thought it should be. The relationship ought to be one of equal rights and duties. If they provided work effort and a responsible attitude, then they would expect a decent wage and satisfactory working conditions in return. An important part of the latter was stable employment and working hours. If the employer did not live up to the conditions of this exchange but departed from the norms of justice, the employees would take it as an expression of disrespect for them as human beings.
