Abstract:
Abstract While, in general, birth rates decline across most developing nations, an important statistic is an increase in life expectancy. According to UK statistics, by 2007 the number of Britons aged over 65 exceeded the number of those aged under 16 for the first time, and it is estimated that by 2015 half of the adult UK population will be aged over 50 (Young, 2002/3). It is also estimated that nearly one in five people currently in the UK will live to see their 100th birthday, according to the UK’s Department for Work and Pensions. This would mean 10 million people — 17 per cent of the population — becoming centenarians (BBC, 2010).
