Abstract:
Abstract During the 1980s it became a popular battle-cry from many academics and practitioners that there was little research and published work on the retail sector. Indeed it was considered to be a relatively neglected area of study. In the 1990s that claim remains more difficult to justify as anyone prepared to browse through the voluminous retail literature will testify. Yet despite this welcome redress, the retail sector cannot be said to be fully investigated. Partly owing to its dynamic, constantly changing structure and the newly emerging consumer markets that characterise the sector, retailing provides a host of opportunities for in-depth investigation. One of these rapidly emerging markets is airport retailing. Despite the fact that tax/duty-free retailing celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1997, little in the way of published academic research has been undertaken.
