Future Developments in Airport Retailing

Paul Freathy and Frank O’Connell

Chapter 7 in European Airport Retailing: Growth Strategies for the New Millennium, 1998, pp 180-195 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract One theme of this book has been the attempt to illustrate the relationship between airport retailing, the macro environment and the wider demands of the air transport industry. While retailing continues to remain a response to the cultural demands of the market it serves, the increasingly international nature of the passenger market has meant that airports require a flexible and proactive approach. Constant change is a characteristic of the industry, and airport retailing, subsumed within this broad definition, has been no less affected by these developments. An understanding of the factors that will continue to influence airport retailing into the next century is as much reliant upon macro-environmental factors as sector-specific pressures.
