Abstract: Abstract One of the nationalistic fears of structural-adjustment induced trade liberalization is that it may lead to de-industrialization, and one of the expected gains of such structural adjustment is export promotion.2 The objective of this paper is to test if de-industrialization has occurred in Pakistan, and whether Pakistan has been able to successfully promote exports since the onset of structural adjustment. Neither industrialization nor export promotion should be viewed as ends in and of themselves. Thus the links of industrialization and export promotion to economic growth are also empirically investigated.
