Management or Leadership?

Neville Bain

Chapter 2 in Successful Management, 1995, pp 14-30 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract What tasks or attributes do we categorise under each of these headings? If we can segregate duties under these two headings will it help managers to be more successful? In fact, de-aggregation is not very helpful in giving a manager pointers for success, just as dictionary definitions are unhelpful. One way that helps managers to gain a real understanding of the scope of leadership in contrast to management, is to build word pictures that stimulate our thinking. A good example of word pictures is shown in Figure 2.1 which is used by a specialist consulting firm, People Change Organisation (PCO).
