Abstract: Abstract The requirement of societal responsibility has become increasingly important for banks during the last few years. The responsiveness of banks vis-á-vis the state, the customers, the labour unions and consumer groups is constantly being stressed. However, when one looks more closely at this problem, it is rather difficult to define precisely the phenomenon of societal responsibility of banks. The following analysis tries to clarify this problem.
