Chapter 6 in Welfare Capitalism in Taiwan, 1997, pp 121-161 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract In the previous chapter, we showed how Taiwan stepped up capitalist development under the direction of the Japanese colonial government and the KMT. A common conclusion of many studies is that the state has played a significant role in promoting economic growth in Taiwan (e.g., Amsden, 1985; Gold, 1986; Haggard, 1990; Wade, 1990). A laissez-faire state is not a good term to describe the Taiwanese experience.
