Chapter 4 in Foreign Investment in China, 1999, pp 82-115 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The last two chapters examined the main attractions of China to foreign investors under the contemporary world economic climate and the evolution of China’s open door policy in the aspect of FDI. In the next three chapters, the nature and key characteristics of China’s foreign investment environment are systematically examined. This chapter centrally focuses on issues related to the hard investment environment, such as the general condition and future prospects of various infrastructures (for example, transportation and telecommunications, and energy and other raw material supply), which can have immediate impacts on the operation and development of foreign invested enterprises in China. The next two chapters focus on the soft investment environment in China, which comprises factors such as Chinese history, culture, political system, social and economic regimes, legal and regulatory systems, labour relations and business services. The unique characteristics of these factors in China can significantly affect the operation and development of foreign invested enterprises both immediately and in the long run.
