Chapter 3 in The Early Computer Industry, 2013, pp 41-87 from Palgrave Macmillan Abstract: Abstract RCA’s roots were back in the early telecommunications market. It started life as the American Marconi Company (Graham 1986: 21; Sobel 1986: 33; Warner 1957: 3–61), the US subsidiary of the world’s leading telecommunications company, Marconi. According to General James G. Harbord, RCA President (19282), during and after the First World War the US government, especially the US Navy, started to put pressure on Marconi to sell its American operations. Marconi was seen as having a monopolistic hold over radio communications, a situation made worse by its foreign ownership. Under this government pressure, Marconi was forced to sell its American subsidiary to a US consortium led by General Electric. The US government encouraged further consolidation of the radio industry, leading to the assets of GE, Westinghouse and AT&T being pooled to form the Radio Corporation of America (RCA). This meant that the USA had a firm that had control over all the patents needed to produce every aspect of radio equipment.
