Abstract: Abstract The much-trumpeted railway renaissance of the late twentieth century has so far failed to show up in investment figures, in spite of the excitement generated by proposals for a European high-speed rail network, political support for COMBI freight transport, and the turnaround of suburban railways in some large cities.
