Introduction
D Christopher Kayes
Chapter 1 in Destructive goal pursuit: The mount everest disaster, 2006, pp 1-8 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter introduces destructive goal pursuit through the story of Bruce Herrod and the South African expedition. It defines the key concepts that appear throughout the book, including destructive goal pursuit, called here goalodicy, and the role of leadership in destructive goal pursuit. This chapter presents the three counterintuitive points of the book: the limits of goals and their pursuit, the need for less attention on goals and more attention on group dynamics, and the problems brought about by strong leadership.
