Towards a Global Response to Workplace Bullying and Violence

Paul McCarthy

Chapter 10 in Safeguarding the Organization against Violence and Bullying, 2004, pp 206-225 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This concluding chapter uses evidence presented in preceding chapters as the basis for the inauguration a global initiative to prevent workplace bullying/violence. Presently, preventive measures within national and regional/state jurisdictions are localized, mainly in wealthy industrialized countries, and are fragmented across OSH, employment relations, legal and criminological responses. Lack of widespread application of procedural referents contributes to difficulties in safeguarding. The development of policies and strategies that have widespread acceptance in the international community will be at the core of a global initiative. A mutually supportive balance of regulatory responses and organizational value-adding approaches geared to indicators of sustainability is considered desirable to optimize safeguarding. A coordinated international response requires commitment by international agencies, nation states, NGOs and TNCs to realize benefits for all stakeholders. A preliminary agenda for a global response is canvassed below.
