The Overlap between Community Violence, Criminal Indices and Aggression at Work

Claire Mayhew

Chapter 4 in Safeguarding the Organization against Violence and Bullying, 2004, pp 59-79 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The discussions in this chapter are focused on identification of country, geographical area, and community/cultural risk factors that may spill over and manifest as one or other form of occupational violence. It is argued that cultural norms of behaviour (including attitudes to violence) and external pressures permeate the factory/office boundaries. That is, organizations are embedded within the social and cultural frameworks of their environment. Hence if the strength of precursor risk factors for violence/bullying varies significantly across geographical areas within countries, the incidence of occupational violence may also alter between organizations based in different suburbs. The author of this chapter hypothesizes that the risk of ‘spillover’ occurring is predictable, providing reliable precursor data are available and are objectively assessed.
