Abstract: Abstract There is a lot of anecdotal evidence that formal training of mentors and mentees has been an important part of many successful mentoring schemes. As well as specific skills development opportunities, training sessions have also provided the forum for commonly held concerns and questions to be acknowledged and dealt with. The formal bringing together of all participants of a new mentoring scheme (whether mentors and mentees are trained together or separately is another decision to be made) allows the overall context of the scheme to be set, and for general messages from the organisation to be made.
