Abstract:
We live in a world of organisations. Our opportunity to express our creativity is consequently constrained by the needs of the organisation and its accountability to customers and shareholders. We also live in a social world where we must work with others and share ideas. As Carl Jung (1993) says, ‘I need we to be fully I.’ So, when we’re part of a team our opportunity for unbridled creativity is again constrained — this time by the pressure and differing viewpoints of colleagues. Frustrating? It can be, especially if you’re an individualist. Yet this constraint is not necessarily negative, because what organisations should also do is provide resources, support and direction. They make dreams realisable. Similarly, the other members of a creative team should provide us with inspiration and energy. So the way we should really evaluate an organisation and a team is how well it contributes to the freedom of all parties. This turns our role as a team participant on its head.
