Chapter 4 in Cultural Influences on IT Use, 2003, pp 74-89 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract As discussed in the last chapter, one of the issues to be considered in an international comparison on the organisational use of IT is how to construct an analytical model which makes it possible to differentiate the effect of one specific factor (that is, national culture) from others and to explain differences among nations which the empirical data suggest. Therefore, some factors should be controlled for in the present study so as to differentiate national cultural effects from other contextual factors. In this chapter I examine the possible factors which may affect results other than national cultural influences and ways to minimise these influences As reviewed in Chapter 2, Sorge and his colleagues (1983) investigated the influence of national socio-economic conditions on the development and use of computerised numerical control (CNC), in which they make a comparison of comparable engineering firms between two countries. The research shows that in the face of similar developments of CNC technologies, the reactions of firms differ in different national contexts which are shaped by unchanging socio-technical traditions.
